Jury statement
Power of Design
Let me express my heartily congratulations to BraunPrize Event 2009.
Having participated to the design award as a juror is great honour and pleasure for me. The participation might become unforgettable for all my life. I will appreciate every body concerned to the event.
I was amazed by the height of the level of those applicants’ works, I could feel the great power of design through the jury.
Today, design is joining all aspects of our life and contributing to the development of industries and human well being. Its role is not only to revitalize economic activities but also capable to bring people happiness. Further more, it is capable to resolve social issues such as global warming, aging, disasters and refugees. Such design power will be more needed from now on.
For that situation to come, the way design works may be varying. Today’s design couldn’t sustain its expertise without cooperation between advanced science and technology. Of course design has been developing by integrating function and aesthetics. I believe however, deeper cooperation with technologies will be inevitable. Naturally, this doesn’t mean that design may become solely led by technologies. Rather “more flexible and original ideas something called “design thoughts” are to lead and inspire technologies to a new realm.
I have found many works among the applicants for the BraunPrize that have power borne from such tie between a new technology and design.
Meanwhile the matter we shouldn’t forget is that design will inspire people. It could be asserted as power will give people joy to live through beauty. Japanese have spirituality to see soul in things. Namely, there is soul in the design perfected to ultimate quality. I am afraid this may be a bit too abstract but often it is explained as to find soul of things even in a tea cup.
Design itself deeply allied with scientific and technological solution, and at the same time it is definitely a cultural practice. When the spirit of a user and that of things resonate, our inspiration will arise. In this aspect, BraunPrize has found an excellent answer.
Those awarded works of BraunPrize would awake our emotions in many outcomes such as identifying issues through excellent insight, an objective and scientific research, a form giving development embodying a new technology with a unique view and a finely polished result. This is what I call the power of design that provides humans and the earth with happiness.
BraunPrize has been nurturing much Power of Design since then. I am sincerely wishing Braun Prize will develop more and more from now on.
Thank you for your kind attention.
